The Owl’s Nest – Office

The office is the back office of The Owl’s Nest community workshop. This is where we coordinate plans, work on designs and software, and do the kind of precision work you’d rather not do in the middle of the workshop. It’s not a general drop-in workshop space, but it is where we can prepare and solve a lot of things “behind the scenes”.

We usually work here by appointment. You’re still welcome to drop in for coffee and a chat during our office hours. Want to plan something or make sure it fits? Make an appointment. For an overview of all locations, see Locations.

Drop by or book a time?

Dropping in for coffee and a chat is fine during our office hours. If you want to discuss something that takes time, if you want to sit quietly, or if you want to be sure there’s space and attention, it’s better to book an appointment.

Are you coming on behalf of an organisation with a participant, student, or client? Then also see For professionals.

What is the office for within the community workshop?

The office is the back office of The Owl’s Nest community workshop. It’s a fixed, calm place for the kind of work you’re better off not doing “between the workbenches”: making plans, careful testing, working out designs, and repairs where you need focus and oversight. This is also the main office of the underlying foundation. You can read more about that on the foundation’s main website.

  • Meetings and coordination (also if you’re coming via a programme, organisation, or care provider);
  • Design and computer work (3D models, websites, and software projects);
  • Delicate repairs and diagnostics where you want to measure, test, and iterate calmly;
  • Project preparation (selecting parts, fitting, measuring, and planning).

Do you mainly want hands-on work at a workbench, with machines, or with more space to build? Then this is usually a better fit: Paul Krugerstraat or (by appointment) Spaarndamseweg.

3D printing, plotting, and precision work

At the office we do a lot of preparation and precision work. This is also where we often manage the 3D printers and their tooling, and where we can (when it fits within planning) combine printing and design work with testing and finishing. Because this is a back office, we always coordinate this in advance.

Do you have a specific question (for example: “can I work out a design here and start a print”)? Make an appointment and we’ll see what fits your plan and our schedule.

Calm, atmosphere, and house rules

Because we work by appointment here, we can better account for calm, focus, and guidance. We ask you to work sober, treat others respectfully, and coordinate heavier or more complex steps in advance. The agreements that go with that are listed at Calm and house rules.

Are you looking for a low-stimulus place to build back up and find your rhythm again? Then also see Calm and recovery.
