3D printing

3D printing is ideal for prototypes, replacement parts, enclosures, small helper pieces and small batches. At the community workshop The Owl’s Nest you can work on your print plan in a calm, practical setting: we think along on design choices, material selection and print settings, and we help you estimate what is feasible with the printers that are available at that time.

At The Owl’s Nest, 3D printing usually works best by appointment, because it almost always involves preparation and lead time. You will often need a computer workspace for design and slicing, a specific printer may need to be free, and filament or resin may need to be set aside or ordered (sometimes from our storage). For materials such as nylon and certain copolymers, drying is also required. And because prints can run for a long time (sometimes more than a day), we prefer to align in advance on which printer, location and schedule fit your plan best.

Printers and equipment

We have several FDM and resin printers:

  • Spaarndamseweg

    • Prusa XL with two toolheads.
  • Office

    • Prusa MK4 (in an enclosure),
    • Prusa MK3S (in an enclosure),
    • Prusa MMU (in an enclosure), and
    • Elegoo Saturn 16K with curing/washing station.
  • Storage

    • Cel Robox (dual material upgrade) and a
    • Leap Frog.

Which printer(s) we use depends on your part, material, desired quality and the schedule. If your plan depends on a specific machine or material, please let us know in advance.

How it works in practice

3D printing is often not a “quick job”. That is why we align in advance on:

  • your goal (prototype, replacement part, enclosure, cosmetic part);
  • which file you have (STL/3MF/STEP) and whether design work is still needed;
  • what the part needs to handle (strength, heat, flexibility, appearance);
  • whether you need FDM or resin (and what that means for post-processing);
  • whether preparation is needed (for example drying material or freeing up a printer).

Based on that, we choose a printer together and make a plan. Sometimes you can work on your design or slicing during your appointment while a print runs in the background.

What do you bring?

If possible, bring:

  • your 3D file (preferably STL, 3MF or STEP) or a link to your design;
  • a short description of what the part needs to do (dimensions, load, temperature);
  • if you want a specific filament or resin: your own material (colour/type/brand).

Materials

We keep a small stock of filament and resin. Most of the time we have PLA, PETG, nylon and metal-filled filaments available, plus a limited selection of resins. If you need a specific colour, brand, type (for example heat resistant, flexible or carbon-filled) or a larger quantity, bring it yourself or coordinate with us in advance. Some materials require preparation (such as drying), so please mention this early.

Make an appointment

Want to check what is feasible, or print something and be sure the right printer, materials and workspace are available? Make an appointment and briefly share what you want to make (and which file you have). We are happy to think along.
