Music includes playing and making music together, but also building instruments, electronic music, sound experiments and projects that connect music with technology. A project may begin with an existing instrument, a musical idea or simply the question of how to create a new sound yourself.
The capability is broader than one instrument, musical style or technique. A location may emphasise synthesisers and electronics, building acoustic instruments, digital control or making music together. Select a location to see its local approach.
Music can develop through playing an instrument, but also through building something, connecting circuits, exploring materials or experimenting with rhythm and sound. Musical and practical skills can therefore come together within the same project.
Explore rhythm, melody, ensemble playing and improvisation with existing or self-built instruments, individually or together with others.
Build and explore synthesisers, sound generators, MIDI controllers and other projects in which electronics and digital technology control or produce music.
Design and build acoustic or electronic instruments, loudspeakers and other objects in which materials, construction and sound influence one another.
A musical project does not have to begin with knowing how to play. You can start with a circuit, mechanism, material or design and discover the sounds and musical possibilities that emerge while working. A particular sound can equally become the reason to develop electronics, software or a physical construction.
Prototypes, unexpected sounds, unfinished instruments and experiments are part of the process. A simple oscillator may develop into a synthesiser, a MIDI controller can be adapted through use, and the form of a self-built instrument may change as the relationship between material, mechanics and sound becomes clearer.
Music projects can combine several fields. A synthesiser or sound generator connects with Electronics, MIDI and software with Digital, while enclosures and components can be made through Woodworking or 3D-printing. Instrument building can bring materials, construction, design and musical expression together within a single project.
You may bring an instrument, idea, circuit, design or example, but you do not need a complete plan. Decide what you are curious about: learning to use an instrument, making music with others, exploring a particular sound or building something yourself that can make or control music.
