At The Owl’s Nest, we have several laptops and desktop PCs that could still be useful, but often do not have enough memory. With extra RAM, many of these systems can run smoothly again and be put back to work.
We are therefore mainly looking for memory for laptops and desktops. Complete laptops, PCs and useful accessories are welcome too. A small upgrade, a clean or a replacement part can often make a system perfectly usable again. It is good to see equipment actually being used rather than sitting idle.
Memory for laptops and desktops is especially welcome. We can also make good use of complete laptops, PCs, adapters, power supplies, cables, docking stations, monitors, keyboards, mice and other usable computer accessories.
Faulty systems are not necessarily worthless. Sometimes they can still be repaired; otherwise, their parts may help get another system working properly again.
Most of the computer and electronics work involved in this reuse takes place at Spaarndamseweg. Systems are inspected, tested, cleaned, upgraded where needed and made usable again there.
Usable laptops and PCs can then be used for Linux installations, practice and other practical purposes within The Owl’s Nest. Where a system is suitable, it can also be made available to someone whose low income makes access to usable digital equipment difficult.
Where equipment cannot continue as a complete system, we use it as a source of parts for other machines whenever possible, so even smaller donations can make a real difference.
It would be a waste for usable hardware to sit idle when a little extra memory or a small repair could give it years of further use. Older laptops in particular are often still perfectly useful for browsing the web, administration, writing, learning, email, practice or a lightweight Linux installation.
We mainly ask for hardware that has a concrete use. Memory, parts and complete systems can help get existing laptops and PCs working properly again, build usable machines and repair other systems with suitable components.
Even when a device is no longer usable as a whole, it can still have value. A good adapter, a working memory module, a usable screen, a keyboard or an individual connector may be exactly the part missing elsewhere. We try to reuse hardware as fully as possible instead of writing it off too soon.
For us, this is about more than technology. It is also about looking after things that are still useful and what they can make possible for someone else. That is why we consider a worthwhile new use for each system and component.
Any hard drive or SSD donated with a laptop or PC is wiped without inspecting its contents before the system or storage device is reused. We do not look at the data.
If you would like to keep particular files first, please say so when handing in the equipment and bring your own USB stick or external drive for those files to be copied onto. Without such a request, any data present will be erased without its contents being inspected first.
Hardware must always be dropped off at Tugelastraat 55, and only by appointment. If you have equipment available, or are unsure whether it is useful, please contact us. Mention that it concerns memory or computer hardware for reuse.
You are also welcome to send a message simply to let us know what you have, without arranging anything straight away. We can then take a look together at whether it fits what we can currently put to good use.
