At Linux Café Haarlem, donated laptops and computers are inspected, repaired or upgraded where necessary, and installed with Linux. Usable systems are then given away again. Part of this work takes place at The Owl’s Nest – Spaarndamseweg, where Henry and other volunteers receive support with knowledge, advice and repairs.
A great deal can be done with parts and equipment that are already available. Even so, an otherwise usable computer may sometimes be missing exactly the component needed to repair or upgrade it properly. This campaign makes it possible to purchase such missing parts when needed.
Linux Café Haarlem collects laptops and computers itself. The Owl’s Nest separately collects computers and computer equipment for repair and reuse. Linux Café Haarlem can also make use of equipment from that collection. In those cases, it remains administratively recorded that the equipment was donated to The Owl’s Nest.
The available systems are assessed for usability and can then be repaired, upgraded and installed with Linux. Laptops in particular usually find a new user quickly. Desktop computers and iMacs are less in demand and often remain available for longer.
Having a stock of donated computers and parts does not automatically mean that exactly what is needed for every system is available. An otherwise usable laptop may, for example, have too little memory, need an SSD, be missing a suitable power adapter or require another specific replacement part.
Because laptops can often be given away again quickly, a targeted repair or upgrade can make the difference between a system remaining unused and a computer becoming properly usable again. Financial contributions to this campaign make it possible to purchase the missing component when it cannot be sourced from the available stock.
At The Owl’s Nest – Spaarndamseweg, Henry and other volunteers can not only work on the computers, but also draw on available knowledge and experience. The Owl’s Nest provides support including advice, assistance with repairs and the transfer of knowledge that can be applied again to future systems.
This means the work is not only about replacing a component. Where possible, people also look together at what is faulty, which solution is appropriate and how a repair or upgrade can be carried out.
This campaign is specifically for financial contributions towards parts that are missing from the work carried out by Linux Café Haarlem. Anyone who would like to contribute usable computers, laptops, parts or other computer equipment to The Owl’s Nest can use the separate collection campaign for computers and computer equipment.
